From Scotland’s Orkney Brewery on the Orkney Islands comes their “Skull Splitter Rich Ale”. This imperial ale is not as scary as the name implies. The beer pours a brownish colour with a tan head. The aroma of this ale consists of malts, sweet fruits and floral hops. The flavour consists of sweet fruits, malts and a good kick of hops bitterness and an ever so slight alcohol burn to finish it off. The alcohol content comes in at a hight 8.5%. My skull is still intact but this ale did pack a punch! To much and you may just think you cracked your skull.
Commercial Description: Skull Splitter is our strongest ale: which is named after Thorfinn Einarsson who was the 7th Viking Earl of Orkney. Sophisticated, satiny smooth with a deceptively light character, it is a tribute to our colourful forbear.
Food Pairing as per brewery: Norman Sinclair recommends drinking his Skull Splitter Ale with pate, redmeat dishes and strong cheeses.
