Steve’s Beer Advent Calendar Day 3 – Moralité American IPA – Brasserie Dieu du Ciel

Mikes wife gift me a beer advent calendar she put together herself. I thought I should post each day as a review. Now, you’re wondering: where are days 1 and 2? I got this on day two and didn’t think of this series until today so I’ll catch up.

So, on with the show.

From Brasserie Dieu du Ciel in St Jerôme, Quebec I got Moralité American IPA. It pours a beautiful, hazy hay yellow with a creamy head of very fine bubbles. Carbonation is invisible through the haze.

The nose is super herbaceous. Celery and thyme come forward quickly with a little raw, wet cereal grain following. There might be a hint of tangerine.

The flavours are super hop forward. Herb-y bitterness really dominates, so much so that it is almost hot or spicy. A sweet tangerine note offers a nice counter to the hops. The finish goes on forever with bitter hops.

Commercial description: The concept of Morality is perhaps a subjective one, as the history of alcohol in Quebec May demonstrate. This IPA is brewed with a dare-we-say excessive quantity of Simcoe, Citra and Centennial hops. The dry finish is highly aromatic and slightly resinous, invoking tropical fruits atop dominant hop bitterness. Moralité was crafted at our Montreal location in 2012 in collaboration with John Kimmich of The Alchemist brewery in Vermont USA.

Tone Def Double IPA with Blood Orange – Twin Sails Brewing (Boombox Brewing)

From Twin Sails Brewing in Port Moody in collaboration with Vancouver’s Boombox Brewing comes their “Tone Def Double IPA with Blood Orange”.  The beer pours  an exceptionally cloudy orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of blood orange, tropical fruits, citrus, tangerine, sweetness and floral hops.  The flavour is of blood orange, tangerine, tropical fruits, citrus, mild citrus rind, bready malts, bitterness and alcohol.  The alcohol content comes in at 8% with an IBU of 60.  This might be my favourite of the new beers from Twin Sails Brewing.  This stuff is epic!

Commercial Description:  Tone Def Double IPA is a collaboration with our friends at Boombox Brewing. This NE style DIPA has an addition of 500lbs of blood orange purée and 2L of fresh blood orange zest on top of an already massive amount of hops. We added two huge dry hop additions of Citra, Amarillo and Azacca hops which amplified the citrus juiciness of the aroma and flavour. This beer is nothing short of getting hit in the face with an orange.

Icarus Mosaic Saison – Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks

From Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks in Richmond comes their “Icarus Mosaic Saison”.  The beer pours a cloudy yellow with a white head.  The aroma consists of tropical fruits,  citrus, stone fruit, spices, wheat and yeast.  The flavour is very juicy with tropical fruits, stone fruit, tangerine, citrus, citrus rind, wheat, yeast and a hint of spices and bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 7% with an IBU of 35.  This is not your standard saison but in all the right ways.  If you are going to bend styles you have to do it right and Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks does it very well!

Commercial Description:  A Belgian-syle saison single hopped with the Brewmaster’s favorite:  Mosaic Hops.

Hikari Imperial Dry-Hopped Sourweisse – Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks (Powell Street Craft Brewery)

This is a great collaboration beer and is something you should pick up if you find a bottle or three.
