Cosmic Wave Double IPA – Tofino Brewing Company

From Tofino Brewing out of Tofino on Vancouver Island comes their “Cosmic Wave Double IPA”.   The beer pours an orange colour with an off white head.  The aroma consists of resin, mango, citrus, caramel and floral hops.  The flavour is of and bitterness.  There are some alcohol notes in the flavour for sure but at 9% that is not to surprising.  This Double IPA is on the sweeter side of the spectrum but is still quite tasty.

BC Beer Awards 2016 / Beer Festival – October 15th 2016

With October brings BC Craft Beer Month and with that brings the BC Beer Awards.  Once again this year the awards ceremony and beer festival were held at the Croatian Cultural Centre.  This year the event was held on October 15th just a little earlier than last year.

bcbeerawards2016

I have been attending the BC Beer awards for many years now and it seems to be getting better and better.  With the industry exploding like it is in the province this event will only get better.  Much like always the event began at 4pm and ended at 9pm.  The festival was once again in two room and even had some beer pouring in the front entrance area.  This year there were 75 breweries pouring beer at the festival and 5 cideries.

Stephen Quinn from CBC Radio was once again the voice of the BC Beer Awards this year.  This year 83 breweries entered beers into the competition and there were 750 different beers entered.  Once again this was more breweries entering beer up from 70 last year.  Its nice to see that once again this year more breweries have come out to try their luck.  Instead of doing the awards at the end of the night this year they started it near the beginning.  Lets get to the winning beers of the year!

This year’s Best of Show Flagship IPA is even more exciting as Julia Hanlon of Steamworks becomes the first female Head Brewer in BC to win this award!  A huge congratulations is in order for this!

Once the awards finished everyone went back to enjoying the beer that was on hand.  This was once again an amazing event with amazing beer being poured as well as great people be it craft beer fans or brewery staff.  Every year this event gets bigger and better!  Here is to another year of sticking it to the flavourless garbage that macro breweries make.

Once again like last year I helped set the festival up between 10:30am and 3pm.  It makes the festival even more fun when you are able to get involved in any part of the event.

Slow Cooked Kangaroo Curry (Hoppin’ Cretin IPA – Tofino Brewing Company)

Its been quite some time since I cooked with beer and I have wanted to change that for some time.  Luckily recently I was given some inspiration by finding a store in Coquitlam that sells all sorts of interesting wild meat.  The store is called Hills Foods and is quite an amazing place.  Once I had my Kangaroo meat I searched for a good recipe and found the one on Gourmet Game out of Australia.

Ingredients List:

RooCurry-001

RooCurry-002

800 grams Kangaroo steak diced
1/4 Cup flour
4 Tablespoons olive oil
1 Large onion diced
2 garlic cloves crushed
knob of ginger peeled and minced
2 small red chillies finely sliced
4 tbsp madras curry paste
300ml Condensed Coconut Milk
1 tsp reduced salt beef stock powder (I used OXO)
3/4 Cup IPA (Hoppin’ Cretin IPA – Tofino Brewing Company)
1 Cinnamon stick
1 dried bay leaf
5 baby potatoes halved
pinch salt and pepper

Dice up Kangaroo steak

RooCurry-003

Place flour, salt and pepper into a ziplock bag.  Place portions of kangaroo into the bag and shake to coat.

RooCurry-004RooCurry-005

Heat half the oil in a pan on med-high heat.  Cook the meat in small batches for 2 to 3 minutes until they are browned.  I flipped them half way.  Make sure to not overcook.  Transfer them to the slow cooker.

RooCurry-006 RooCurry-007 RooCurry-008

Dice up the garlic, ginger and onion.

RooCurry-009

Before putting it in the frying pan add the last of the olive oil.  Cook at med-high heat for 4 minutes while stirring.  They should be sauteed and soft.

RooCurry-010

Add the Madras curry paste and the red chillies and cook.  Stir for one minute.

RooCurry-011

Next add coconut milk, beef stock powder and IPA.  Bring this to a boil.  Transfer this mix to the slow cooker.

RooCurry-012 RooCurry-013 RooCurry-014 RooCurry-015 RooCurry-016 RooCurry-017 RooCurry-018RooCurry-019

Add cinnamon stick, bay leaf and potatoes.  Mix all of the ingredients in the slow cooker.

RooCurry-020 RooCurry-021 RooCurry-022 RooCurry-023 RooCurry-024

At this point I put the curry in the fridge overnight so that I could plug it in first thing in the morning for dinner.  You can just prep it first thing in the morning though.

Cook on LOW for 5-6 hours or as long as you  are at work.

RooCurry-025 RooCurry-026

When you are ready to eat it serve it with rice and naan bread.  If you have trouble with spice then some yogurt on the side would not hurt.  Don’t forget to serve the meal with the beer you cooked it with also!

RooCurry-027 RooCurry-028

I have never attempted making a curry and I have not every cooked Kangaroo.  I am quite happy to say that the meal was delicious even if I over baked my naan bread.

I did not even register the pun at play with this beer and meal until I finished this post.

Hoppin’ Cretin IPA – Tofino Brewing Company

From Tofino Brewing out of Tofino on Vancouver Island comes their “Hoppin’ Cretin IPA”.  The beer pours an golden colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of floral hops up front with citrus, grapefruit peel and some caramel malts.  The flavour is of fruity citrus large on the front of the beer with some citrus peel, caramel malts and medium bitterness finishing things off.  The alcohol content comes in at 7.5%.  While I like my IPA’s to have huge bitterness this is still a very well made IPA and it is quite balanced.

Commercial Description: INDIA PALE ALE • GOLDEN COLOUR  LIGHT, CARAMEL MALT BODY • HEAVILY HOPPED WITH NOTES OF CITRUS, TROPICAL FRUIT & PINE • EXTREMELY DRY FINISH • LOBOTOMY
