The Jungle Bird Tropical Dark Sour – Dandy Brewing Company

From the Dandy Brewing Company in Calgary Alberta comes their “The Jungle Bird Tropical Dark Sour”.  The beer pours a deep brown colour with a brown head.  The aroma consists of big tropical fruits, tartness and some roasted malts.  The flavour is of tropical fruit, pineapple, citrus, tartness, roasted malts, caramel and brown sugar.  The alcohol content comes in at 5%.  This was not your typical sour ale and takes its inspiration from Tiki cocktails from my understanding.  While I don’t drink cocktails I can say that this was really enjoyable.

Commercial Description:  An homage to the classic Tiki cocktail. This beer has notes of demerara sugar, bitter lime, tropical pineapple coming together for a refreshing sour that is like no other.

Huge Citrus Hazy Pale – Moody Ales

From Moody Ales out of Port Moody comes their “Huge Citrus Hazy Pale”.  The beer pours a hazy orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of citrus, tropical fruit, melon and some sweetness in the finish.  The flavour is of melon, citrus, tropical, grapefruit, orange peel, some mild biscuit, hops bitterness and resin.  The alcohol content comes in at 6.1% with an IBU of 35.  This is a pretty cool release from Moody Ales and I hope they keep up the Hazy releases.

Commercial Description: Inspired by the hazy beers that all you kids are going crazy for these days, our brewer Sho started working on this recipe over a year ago. He had never tasted a North East Pale but decided to brew something similar. After some experimentation he landed on using typical North West hops and leaving out the oats and lactose sugar commonly used in that style. Those decisions leave us with a very juicy, well balanced beer with a lighter body than it’s North East cousins. Huge Citrus gets a massive addition of Cascade and Mosaic late in the brew, and is then dry-hopped with copious amounts of Cascade and Mosaic hops while the yeast is still active, leaving a Huge Citrus aroma and flavour – notes of tropical fruit, stone fruit, orange, grapefruit & pomelo. We used Sacc Trois yeast to ferment this beer to really increase the juicyness, hazyness and to add a bit of funk. This medium to light bodied beer is very well balanced, juicy, not sweet and VERY crushable.

Chrono Wet Hop IPA – Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks

From Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks in Richmond comes this years version of “Chrono Wet Hop IPA”.  The beer pours a copper orange colour with an off white head.  The aroma consists of semi tropical fruits, citrus, floral hops and a hint of malt.  The flavour is of resin, pine, herbal, tropical, citrus, caramel and some bitterness in the finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 6.9% with an IBU of 66.  I have not been the biggest fan of fresh hopped beers over the last few years as they lack bitterness.  I am happy to say this one was a tasty one and a good kick off for the fresh hop season.

Commercial Description: Chrono Wet Hop IPA: Time is of the essence. Freshly picked Centennial and Cascade hops from BC Hop Co were immediately brought to the brewery and thrown into the brew within hours of picking. The magic of the fresh hops deliver a juiciness and dankness that we will never get from dried hops. Enjoy a light malt body and a citric blast from the wet hops!

Tropical Milkshake ISA – The Parkside Brewery

From Port Moody’s The Parkside Brewery comes their “Tropical Milkshake ISA” their Anniversary beer.  The beer pours a murky orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of tropical fruits, juicy hops, lactose and floral hops.  The flavour is of tropical fruits, juicy, lactose, resin, earth, dank hops and some bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 4.6% with an IBU of 40.  More dank and bitter than your average Milkshake IPA but I quite enjoyed it.
