Brothers in Hip Hops – VCBW – June 5, 2014

For the Second year in a row the Brothers in Hops was held at the Butcher and Bullock in Downtown Vancouver.  Due to the Hip Hop theme this year the event was renamed Brothers in Hip Hops.  The event brought together local breweries Parallel 49 and Central City brewing.  Also at the event though was Gigantic Brewing and Ninkasi Brewing both from Oregon.  Almost every beer involved in the event was an IPA or something with a big hops bitterness in the least.

Like most events for the Vancouver Craft Beer Week I was able to hang out with so many great beer friends who have turned into just great friends.  I was also able to hang out with some of the best Brewmasters in the Country in Gary Lohin and Graham With from Central City Brewers & Distillers and Parallel 49 Brewing.  My favourite beer of the night had to be the special VCBW release from Parallel 49 Brewing called “187 on a Motha Fuk’n Hop Imperial IPA”.  This beer was so popular during VCBW that there is talks of making a bomber version of the IPA.

Thanks Butcher and Bullock for hosting a wonderful event!  Service may have started a bit slow but that it totally expected on a big event like this and things started running smoothly pretty quickly!

CAMRAPALOOZA – VCBW – June 2, 2014

Every year during Vancouver Craft Beer Week the Alibi Room holds an event called Hoppapalooza.  It brings some of the best beer together for people to sample.  This event sells out very fast and has a serious cult following.  The day after Hoppapalooza though Camra BC members are given a chance to partake in this event in a camra memeber only Camrapalooza!  I had not intended to go to the event as I did not want to fight to get a ticket.  Luckily for me a friend got sick and I was able to purchase his ticket from him day of the event.  So I headed out to the alibi Room on June 2nd, 2014.  The beer list like always was epic with lots of crazy beers.  It was great to hang out with some of my favourite people in the BC beer scene and meet some new amazing people as well!

Here is the list of beer that I tried at the event.  All beer were poured into 4oz beer glasses.

As you would see in the photos a meal was also provided with the cost of the ticket.  There was three choices for dinner inducing a beef burger, veggie burger and a crispy chicken breast burger.  There was also salads and chilli’s.  The food was just as great as the beer.  I would like to thank Nigel and the entire staff of Alibi Room for hosing an amazing event and VCBW for being amazing once again.

New Belgium vs Steamworks Collaboration Throw Down! – VCBW – May 31st, 2014

It is that time again!  Vancouver Craft Beer Week has begun again for 2014!  On May 31st 2014 I went to the New Belgium vs Steamworks Collaboration Throw Down!  Steamworks Brewing out of Vancouver/Burnaby and New Belgium Brewing out of Colorado brewed a collaboration ale called “Rolling Golden Belgian Ale”.  A spiced Belgian Style Pale Ale that tasted great and was brewed by Caolan Vaughan brewmaster for Steamworks and Jamie Martin brewmaster of New Belgium Brewing.  The event was held at the Bimini a Donnely Group Pub in kitsilano.

On top of serving the collaboration beer both Steamworks and New Belgium brought out a bunch of their standard and limited edition beers.  New Belgium brought out a ton of their Lips Of Faith series beers.  Steamworks Brewing had both their brewmaster Caolan Vaughan and brewer for the brewpub Tak Guenette on site for the event.  New Belgium sent out one of their Staff/Owners out from Portland Oregon for the event also although sadly I do not remember his name.  The event was great fun with tons of great beer and just as many great people!

I look forward to the other events that I will be attending this year!  So far this years Vancouver Craft Beer Week is shaping up to be a great time!

VCBW Collaboration Altbier – Parallel 49 Brewing

O’hare’s Beer Club June 2013 Box

From Parallel 49 brewing out of East Vancouver comes the “VCBW Collaboration Altbier”.  This Vancouver Craft Beer Week Collaboration beer is an old brew from Storm Brewing originally called Red Sky Alt.  The beer pours a chestnut colour with an off white head.  The aroma consists of malts, sweet citrus, wheat and some malts.  The flavour is of malts, sweet citrus, wheat, hops bitterness and an earthy finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 5.8% with and IBU of 25.  This was a nice crafted Altbier with just enough flavour to bring you back for a second bottle.

Commercial Description:  Each year BC Craft Brewers team up to creat the VCBW Collaboration Beer and donate the profits to a local charity.  This year, the brewers have chosen to recreate Storm Brewing’s Red Sky Alt, one of the first craft beers produced in BC.  This year’s proceeds from the sales are being donated to A Better Life Foundation, which will use the money to help fund the Save On Meats Meal Token Program.  Brewed and bottled at Parallel 49 Brewing.

Food Pairing according to O’hare’s Beer Club notes are as follows:Grilled Meats and Saucy BBQ

The River Boat Throwdown! – VCBW – June 6th, 2013

By June 6th, 2013 the Vancouver Craft Beer Week was in full swing with some amazing events all over the city!  “The River Boat Throwdown” held at the Portside Pub in Gastown was just one of these amazing events.  It was also the second event of Vancouver Craft Beer Week that I was able to attend and was the nights Feature event.  The ticket to the event was $25 dollars and it included a collectors glass, gambling token as well as one drink ticket with more drink tickets came in at $1.  Once the casks emptied you could purchase pints from the bar.

“The River Boat Throwdown” was a presentation of the Portside Pub and VYR Beer Tweetup.  The pub was set up like a River Boat Casino for the event including game tables with professional dealers, dancers and a proformances by The Sweetpea Swing Band.  The night also included casks from some amazing local breweries including Deep Cove, Lighthouse, Vancouver Island, Parallel 49, Central City, R&B, Red Truck, Russell, Tofino and Howe Sound Brewing.  To top it all off costumes were encouraged for the event to give it more life!

The 10 casks were as follows:
1 – Central City Brewing – Imperial Red Ale of Doom & Awesomeness
2 –  Parallel 49 Brewing – Lord of the Dry Hops
3 – Vancouver Island Brewing – Kaffir Lime Leaf Saison
4 – Lighthouse Brewing – Crowded House Pineapple Head
5 – Deep Cove Brewing Company – Wise Crack West Coast Lager
6 – Russell Brewing – Summer Daze Saison
7 – Red Truck Beer – Heavenly Delicious English Strong Ruby Ale
8 – Tofino Brewing Company – IPA w Lemongrass & Tamarind
9 – Howe Sound Brewing – The Dark King
10 – R&B Brewing Company – Apple Jack Moonshine Ale

Nick and Jonny of YVR Beer Tweetup were running twitter contests all night with the final contests centering on the casks themselves.  There were three categories for the casks including first emptied (Quick Draw), best name (The Gambler) and best beer (Cask Maverick).  The Winner of the Quick Draw award went to Russell Brewing – Summer Daze Saison, The Gambler award went to Lighthouse Brewing – Crowded House Pineapple Head and Cask Maverick went to none other than Parallel 49 Brewing – Lord of the Dry Hops.  If I made my own choices for these awards it would have been a bit different with The Gambler going to Central City Brewing – Imperial Red Ale of Doom & Awesomeness and the Cask Maverick being a split between Parallel 49 Brewing – Lord of the Dry Hops and Red Truck Beer – Heavenly Delicious English Strong Ruby Ale.  But hey that is half the fun of craft beer isn’t it?

Having this blog has introduced me to so many really cool people and it still blows my mind.  I find that I am visiting with so many new acquaintances and friends that I forget to pay attention to things like gambling and voting for best cask at events.  Saying this if you see me at an event like this please say hi as I love meeting new people!

I would like to finish by saying Cheers to YVR Beer Tweetup, The Portside Pub, Vancouver Craft Beer Week and all the amazing people in the local Craft Beer Scene that made not only this event but every event so much fun to be a part of!
