From Victoria’s Category 12 Brewing in Victoria comes their “Subversion Imperial IPA” newly available in 4 pack cans. The beer pours a copper colour with an off white head. The aroma consists of tropical fruits, citrus, floral hops, grains and some alcohol heat. The flavour is of tropical fruits, berries, citrus, citrus rind, bitterness with maybe a hint of caramel. There is alcohol present in the flavour but at 8.2% that I expected. The beer also has an IBU of 85. Category 12 Brewing is celebrated locally for good reason as they do not make bad beer. This beer is fantastic and a good example of what we can do on the Northern portion of the West Coast.
Commercial Description: This year’s batch of Subversion Imperial IPA is off the charts! A 355 mL 4-pack and an all new dry hop brings our Imperial IPA into reach as a weekday go-to. Subversion is a big, boldly flavourful IPA that balances a strong hop character with a medium-full body, making it the perfect, easy-drinking accompaniment to all sorts of scheming. Upend the established order and enjoy all the power and complexity of our Imperial IPA in a new format. Welcome to the lab.
From Victoria’s Category 12 Brewing comes their “Zombie Repellant Ale 2″ or ZRA2. This beer is their answer to the Pumpkin ale as they do not seem to like them. The beer pours a deep copper colour with a tan head. The aroma consists of caramel, toffee, dark fruity notes, candied sugar, earth and some floral hops. The flavour is of Belgian yeast, spices, toffee, caramel, dark fruit, citrus, candied sugar, citrus rind, resin and some leafy hops. The alcohol content comes in at 5.8% with an IBU of 24. This Anti-Pumpkin beer is really tasty and I will have to get some more of it.
Commercial Description: Our 2017 ZRA 2 is a Belgian-inspired red ale with a fruit forward aroma, full body and hints of spice from both our Belgian yeast and aromatic hop selections. In the middle of the night, when all evidence of light has faded, that’s when they come. Be vigilant, be prepared. The throngs of pumpkin beer loving hoards can’t keep you from what you really want… Zombie Repellant Ale. Our ZRA will increase your resolve to fight through the zombie hoards. Guaranteed to contain no pumpkin.
Well it is that time of year again! Driftwood Brewing out of Victoria BC has brought us their 2017 version of their wet hopped “Sartori Harvest IPA”. In traditional fashion I could not find this beer in Vancouver but I did find it while in Kelowna. The beer poured a fruity tropical notes with floral and herbal middle and some pine at the end. The flavour is of mild resin and bitterness, herbal notes, mild hint of malts with mild tropical fruits and a pine finish. The alcohol content comes in at 7%. I was happy to finally really enjoy a bottle of this as the last few years it didn’t do it for me. I hope next years batch is as good or better than this version.
Commercial Description: This wet-hopped IPA can only be brewed once a year when, in the midst of the hop harvest, fresh Centennial hops are spirited from Sartori Cedar Ranch near Chilliwack to our Brew Kettle in Victoria. Sartori’s fresh hops have a delicious profile unique to the patch of land they cultivate in the Columbia Valley making this limited release singular and remarkable.
Earlier in the Summer I checked out Victoria Caledonian Brewery & Distillery the maker of Twa Dogs Beer located in Victoria BC on Vancouver Island. I thought I had lost the photos but I luckily found them.
When you arrive at the brewery and distillery it is a pretty impressive sight. Walking through the doors you find a small tasting room and a larger store with their merchandise and whiskey. This is not a brewery lounge but you can sample any of their beer and their whiskey that they have at the time. I personally sampled 4 beer and enjoyed them although I can not remember exactly which ones I tried at this point.
The brewery and distillery does guided tours but I was not able to go on that tour unfortunately. I did find out that they have a 50HL brewhouse from DME back in Charlottetown with 4 – 100HL and 3 – 50HL fermenters from Specific Mechanical in Saanich. The distillery side of the business has a 5,500L wash still and a 3,600L spirit still from Forsyths, Speyside out of Scotland. This is a really good looking brewery with amazing looking stills. I really enjoyed checking out the system and I always enjoy sipping on their beers.
If you have not been to the brewery then its time to make your way there.

From Lighthouse Brewing in Victoria BC in Collaboration with Richmond’s Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks comes the “Ryujin Belgian Tripel with Plums”. The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a tan head. The aroma consists of plums, candi sugar, some spice with a sweet finish. The flavour is of plums, candi sugar, bubble gum, sweetness but not cloying like many Tripels, some grain, spice from hops and some mild alcohol in the finish. The alcohol content comes in at 8% with an IBU of 20. With the addition of plums to this tripel it makes it taste different than the norm which is good as I usually find Tripels far too sweet and I usually avoid them. I would suggest picking up a bottle or two of this one.
Commercial Description: Our collaboration brew with Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks from Vancouver! A Belgian Tripel Style beer, Ryujin pours golden with dark plum on the nose and palate along with classic banana and spicy clove flavours.
