From Powell Brewery in East Vancouver comes their “5th Anniversary Ale” a Hazy IPA aged in Pinot Noir Barrels with Brettanomyces  for 6 Months.  The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of brett funk, floral hops, pinot noir and oak from the barrel aging.   The flavour is of brett funk, citrus rind, tropical fruit, melon, pinot noir, oak, resin, yeast and bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 7.6%.  This is a definite winner of a beer and very worthy of being the 5th Anniversary beer!

Commercial Description:  Our 5th Anniversary beer features new and old world techniques.  Starting with a Hazy IPA, agin it for 6 months in Pinot Noir barrels with Brettanomyces, and finally dry-hopping it with Ekuanot Cyro hops just before bottle conditioning.  Barnyard brett meets hazy IPA.

En Rouge (Barley Wine) – Steel & Oak Brewing

From New Westminster’s Steel & Oak Brewing comes their “En Rouge (Barley Wine)” a Barley Wine aged in Cabernet Sauvignon Barrels.  The beer pours a deep chestnut brown colour with a brown head.  The aroma consists of dark fruits, oak, dark cherry, red wine, roasted malts and some leather.  The flavour is of dark cherries, dark fruits, plum, red wine, oak, caramel, roasted malts, leather and alcohol.  The alcohol content comes in at 10% with an IBU of 15.  This Barley Wine tastes great with nice notes of red wine that do not overpower the essence of what a barley wine is.

Barrel Aged Scotch Ale (673 of 750) – Mission Springs Brewing

Mission Springs Brewing out of Mission BC have been quietly building up a brand new series of beers.  This series of beer is called the Stave Lake – Lost Barrel Series and the first beer in the series is a “Barrel Aged Scotch Ale”.  A portion of this beer was aged for 10 months in French Oak Barrels while another portion was aged in a freshly drained Okanagan Cabernet Sauvignon barrel for 2 weeks.  Large portions of both barrels were then blended with fresh stainless steel fermented scotch ale to create this beer.  Only 750 bombers were made and are hand numbered with this bottle being number 673.  The beer pours a deep brown colour with hints of ruby red under light and an off white head.  The aroma consist of roasted malts, peat, fruit, oak and a hint of Cabernet Sauvignon.  The flavour is of roasted malts, earth, caramel, toffee, dark fruits, Cabernet Sauvignon, maybe some cherries, oak and a sweet finish.  This is a very complex beer!  The alcohol content comes in at 8% alcohol.  I will probably have to try and hunt some more of this beer down as it is fantastic and only having one bottle to cellar would be awful!

Commercial Description from Head Brewer Kevin Winter:  We took a French Oak barrel and put Scotch Ale to sleep for 10 months. The Ale took on a complex oaky and soft silk-like spirit form. The second barrel had been drained of the previous tenant, Cabernet Sauvignon, the day before in the Okanagan and sent to us the following morning where we inoculated it immediately with our Scotch Ale for a short 2 week nap. It awoke with a massive red wine hangover and a gorgeous bouquet. We took the very best amounts of the two alongside fresh stainless steel fermented Scotch Ale to round it all together, and the result is what’s here in the bottle. A unique expression of barrel aging Ale in French Oak Red Wine Barrels.

Abstrakt AB10 – Brewdog

From Brewdog’s (Scotland) Abstrakt Concept Beer line comes their “Abstrakt AB:10” an Imperial Brown Ale that has been aged in Spanish Red Wine Barrels.  Only 9872 Bottles were produced of this beer and I had bottle 4129.  The beer pours a deep brown semi opaque colour with an off white head.  The aroma is of dark fruits, molasses, oak and some wine.  The flavour consists of Dark fruits like prunes, caramel, oak, molasses and a hint of wine and alcohol.  The alcohol content of this interesting brew is 11.5%.

Commercial Description:  The beer is an 11.5% Imperial Brown Ale which we have aged in amazing Spanish sweet red barrels from Malaga. Stewart Bowman, our Head Brewer, devised an Imperial Brown Ale designed to perfectly complement the wine flavours and extract maximum depth and character from the giant barrels. We also felt the Imperial Brown Ale was ideally suited to be barrel aged and as well as the infusion of the Malaga wine character will also benefit added complexity and maturity from the time in oak.

Love Buzz Saison – Anchorage Brewing Company

Half Time Beverages Beer Box #1

From Anchorage Alaska’s Anchorage Brewing Company comes their “Love Buzz Saison”.  This brew is both aged in French oak wine tanks and bottle fermented with the wild yeast Brettanomyces giving it a very distinct character.  This saison is brewed with Hobbs Family rose hips.  This beer pours a very cloudy light amber colour with an off white head.  The aroma is fruity, sweet with hints of funk from the Brettanomyces yeast and some oak.  The flavour is huge with a sweet wine hint up front from the wine barrel aging followed by lots of fruity notes including orange peel and pineapple.  This is followed by a nice tart funk brought on by the Brett as well as a nice pepperiness and a mild hops bitterness to round everything out.  The alcohol content of this saison is 8% with and IBU of 40.  I am in love with this beer and only wish that it was available in Canada so I could save all the hassle of ordering in the states and having to pick it up from a parcel place down there.

Commercial Description:  A feeling overcomes, deriving of a most curious perplexity. A rich desire awakens to explore the contents of such delicate loveliness. Upon a deep connection with rounded lips, a bitter sweet complexity enters the soul…and so begins an amorous affair.  Heightened awareness envelopes the senses as the grandeur of such bold character develops. Caramel beauty exhibits itself, sprawling its full body widely upward, bubbling with excitement. Tantalizing effects of peppery bitterness grasps the tongue. Enchantment takes hold as a blanket of citrus slowly unfolds. As in any noteworthy love story, a subtle fruity sweetness of a rose emerges to the finish. A warm contentment grazes over, signifying a united marriage of balance and pleasure.  Fortitude has revealed itself to those who have encountered such an enriching experience. An experience so delectable, so defining, so unequivocal. An experience that is Love’s Buzz.
