Chimperial Stout – Big River Brewing Company

From Richmond BC’s Big River Brewing Company located inside the Zone Bowling Centre comes their “Chimperial Stout” a Chipotle Imperial stout.  The beer pours an opaque black with a brown head.  The aroma consists of roasted malts, smoke, sweetness and a hint of spice.  The flavour is of chipotle, roasted malts, smoke, a hit of chocolate and some earth and bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 10% with an IBU of 40.  This beer is very interesting to be sure.  I love spice but not always in beer but this one seems to get the best notes from both an Imperial Stout and a chipotle spice.

Commercial Description:  A big imperial style stout with Chipotle peppers added.  The smoke mingles nicely with roasty stout which gives way to a slow burn that comes from the peppers and the high alcohol.  Brilliant when paired with any cheese!

ZZwickel Lager – Big River Brewing Company

From Richmond BC’s Big River Brewing Company located inside the Zone Bowling Centre comes their “ZZwickel Lager” a German style Zwickelbier or Kellerbier Lager.  The beer pours a golden colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of grainy malts, earthiness and some sweetness.  The flavour is of big grainy and bready malts, a fruity sweetness, some earthiness and mild hops bitterness.  This lager has a quite a bit of body.  The alcohol content comes in at 5% with an IBU of 48.  I don’t run to lagers as a rule but this beer has a ton of flavour and would be a great beer to sip on a patio in the sun or trowing bowling balls down a lane.  Luckily you can do both if you head to the brewery!

Commercial Description:  Unfiltered and hoppy with a mixed strain of fermented lager.  This is not your Dad’s lager (unless Dad is seriously cool!).  A mix of classic European noble hops and NZ Wakatus make this lager unique.

Red Bretty IPA – Big River Brewing Company

From Richmond BC’s Big River Brewing Company located inside the Zone Bowling Centre comes their “Red Bretty IPA”.  This IPA is brewed pure Brettanomyces bruxellensis Trois yeast or as its now classified Saccharomyces “bruxellensis” Trois.  The beer pours a deep copper orange colour with an off white head.  The aroma consists of mango, tropical fruit, some sweetness, earth and floral notes.  The flavour is of pineapple and other tropical fruits, citrus, earth, resin, pine, hops bitterness and a minor funk from the yeast.  The alcohol content comes in at 6.8% with an IBU of 65.  This is a complex and very interesting IPA and I will have to get into a few more glasses of this beer in the not to distant future.  I am a massive fan of Brett yeasts and what they do to beer and this beer is no different!

Commercial Description:  Brewed with a unique, crystal malted rye, for colour and body, hopped up like a big west coast IPA, and fermented with a wonderfully fruity/earthy pure Brett B Trois yeast A beer that defies categories, it’s big and complex yet easy to drink.  If this beer was a woman she’d be a full figured gal for sure!

Acid Trip Soured Wheat Ale – Big River Brewing Company

From Richmond BC’s Big River Brewing Company located inside the Zone Bowling Centre comes their “Acid Trip Soured Wheat Ale”.  Relatively recently there was a shakeup at the Brewpub and there was a new brew master that took over. His name is Bill and he is changing this up with the beer lineup.  The Acid Trip pours a cloudy orange, straw colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of mild tartness, wheat, yeast and some spices.  The flavour is of mild lactic acid sourness, wheat, yeast, citrusy lemon and pineapple.  The alcohol content comes in at 3.4% with an IBU of 3.  I am quite pleased with this beer as I am a massive sour beer fan and I also love a good sessionable ale.  You couldn’t go wrong grabbing a pint of this or a growler fill either!

Commercial Description:  Fermented with lactic acid producing bacteria to be assertively sour, yet refreshingly light.  With hints of lemon and pienapple, this beer is fabulous with food and does not compete with your palette.
