INSEPT1ON Saison – Torque Brewing


From Torque Brewing in Winnipeg Manitoba comes their “INSEPT1ON Saison” a beer aged in French Oak red wine barrels.  The beer pours a yellow colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of saison yeast, spices, oak, citrus and some wine in the finish.  The flavour is of wine, oak, yeast, pepper, bready malt, lemon and generic citrus with a mild bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 6%.  I really enjoyed this wine barrel aged saison and I hope they do more beers like this in the future.

Commercial Description:  Aged 6 months in French oak red wine barrels, this bottle conditioned Saison is both refreshing and light with hints of oak and vanilla.

Wag the Wolf Hopfenweisse – Beau’s All Natural Brewing


From Beau’s All Natural Brewing in Vankleek Hill Ontario comes their “Wag the Wolf Hopfenweisse”.  The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of citrus, citrus rind, tropical fruit, wheat, yeast and a floral hops.  The flavour is of banana, grapefruit, tropical fruit, lemon, citrus rind, wheat, yeast, malt, pine and bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 6.8%.  I enjoyed this wheat beer with a good bitterness bite.

Commercial Description:  Wag the Wolf is a weissbier (wheat beer) that has been generously “late-addition” hopped with organic New Zealand varieties to provide abundant aromas of citrus and tropical fruit. Fermented with a traditional Hefeweizen yeast, expect pleasant fruit and spice flavours with a restrained bitterness on the finish.

Saison Brett 2014 (Cellared 2 years 11 months)- Four Winds Brewing


From Four Winds Brewing in Delta comes their “Saison Brett 2014″ a beer that was bottled on September 25, 2014 and consumed on August 28, 2017.  The beer pours a very cloudy orange colour with a tan head.  The aroma consists of brett funk, tropical fruit, yeast and a bit of sweetness.  The flavour is of tropical fruit, brett funk, earth, some astringency, yeast, earth and bitterness in the finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 7% with an IBU of 28.  While the cork wanted to shoot off of the bottle like a rocket this beer was tasting really good still.  Just be very careful pouring a 2014 vintage.

Commercial Description:  Aged in Okanagan red wine barrels, our Brett Saison is invigorated by wild yeast strain Brettanomyces, inviting hues of straw and earth.

Mating Saison – Dogwood Brewing (Callister Brewing)


From Dogwood Brewing in collaboration with Callister Brewing comes their “Mating Saison”.  The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of rye spice, rye, grainy malts, fruity, yeast and floral hops.  The flavour is of rye, rye spice, grain, resin, grapefruit rind, earth, yeast, herbal and some bitterness.  This is a fairly dry beer.  The alcohol content comes in at 4.6% with an IBU of 20.  I am always a fan of a good collaboration beer and this one is no different.  If you like a good saison you should take a look for this one.

Commercial Description:  The perfect marriage between two breweries saw the birth of this refreshing Rye Saison. Brewed with organic Azacca hops, all organic malt and lots of tender love… this subtly spicy saison ends with a tropical fruit finish that’s patio perfect and sure to please. ’Tis the season stags and stagettes, so go get your rut on.

Comfortably Chum – Mount Arrowsmith Brewing Company


From Mount Arrowsmith Brewing Company in Parksville on Vancouver Island comes their “Comfortably Chum” a Hefeweizen.  The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a tan head.  The aroma consists of wheat, yeast, orange, orange peel, banana and some perfumey floral notes.  The flavour is of orange, orange peel, banana, clove, wheat and yeast.  The alcohol content comes in at 5.5%.  This was an interesting Hefeweizen with the mix of banana and citrus flavours but I enjoyed it.

Commercial Description:  A traditional German style Hefeweizen with Canadian pilsner & brewed with malted wheat. A special German wheat beer strain adds a fantastic bouquet aroma & flavours of banana & clove. Lightly hopped with German Hallertau & finished with sweet orange peel. A complex recipe for simple pleasure. Best enjoyed in a glass.
